Did you know that 70% of the planet’s water is found in the polar caps? Every year millions of tons of melting ice are diluted in the seawater. For this reason, a project named IceDream intends to provide water to the arid areas of the world, like Southern California or Saudi Arabia, towing an iceberg into them. Although it is a huge difficulty for icebergs to be transported to areas in need of drinking water. To simulate this titanic task, some scientists have created a 3D simulation in which a ship is towing an iceberg with polished sides and a flat surface of 7 million tons at a speed that doesn’t exceed 1 knot (1.8 km / h). The trip would last about 4 months from Newfoundland to the Canary Islands. One of the many problems that this project is expected to bring is that the ice will be melting during the journey, for that reason they will cover the submerged with protective plastic and still reach 60% of its ice mass. Another problem is the high cost of transport, taking into account the low speed that the project can be achieved and the needed months.
