Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria. Every since the country joined the European Union, this beautiful city is ready to accept visitors. Compared to Prague and Budapest, this capital might not be glamorous but its surrounding snow peaked mountains can be a surprise for a lot of visitors. There are several attractions all around the town. Ideally travelers should do the wandering by foot. Statues dot the whole city. The most famous is St. Sofia, a golden statue found on top of the hill. The controversial statue is condemned by the church since it looks more like a goddess.
After taking a picture at the statues, there are Roman remains found in St. George Rotunda. This is the oldest and well preserved building in the country. The church is surrounded by ruins of Serdica, a roman town. There are three layers of frescoes that were discovered. You can walk through the Alexander Battenburg Square. This serves as memorabilia that the country was liberated after 400 years of Turks occupation. You can also visit the Russian church of St. Nicholas with a pretty church that is built with Traditional Moscow decorative style. It has yellow exterior and gilded domes. The sparkling sun is a jewel that floods the whole city.
Another great place to see is the dome of St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral. This is the largest place of worship where it commemorates hundred thousands of Russian soldiers that died during the Bulgarian War of Liberation. Majority of churches are lavishly decorated with candles and chandeliers but this cathedral is bright because of large windows. It is best to stop by the market that is lively and colorful. There are a lot of things that you can find in the market from hats to souvenirs. The market halls with fountain in the middle are surrounded with restaurant and bars.
