If someone invites you to spend a weekend in Gallipoli, get well explain whether you will make a trip in Puglia or explore a peninsula of Turkey. There is in fact an area of Anatolia which is called Gallipoli: a large peninsula that creates the Dardanelles that has access to the Sea ofMarmara, forced passage to Istanbul. The Gallipoli peninsula has played a strategic role during all the ages and today it is the historical artifacts and archaeological sites to make it an interesting tourist destination.
The National Historic Park of Gallipoli – which extends for a length of 100 kilometers – is one of the most interesting places in the area of Canakkale (the largest city in the region).
The mini bus carrying tourists departs from the north of the peninsula, from the village of Kilitbahir, and stops at the Turkish Grand Memorial. The other stages are the port of Kabatepe, Anzac Cove and the beach of Kabatepe, which is full of camping sites and restaurants.
Tours last half a day and provide a path focused largely on the events of the more recent conflicts: the Kabatepe War Museum, the trenches of Johnston’s Jolly, the memorials dedicated to soldiers Zealand and Australia (there are 33 altogether, in memory of the many fallen of the war of 1915) and Shrapnel Valley.
