Stradun, the main road, the course is the main street in Dubrovnik, once the Italian Ragusa now is the ideal place for a shopping therapy, recommended for those who stay at the beach or by boat along the coast of Croatia, feeling the lack of windows, an appetizer, or a healthy, traditional, italic “rub”.
The Avenue was once a marshy channel that separated the city proper setting up of Ragusa in the nearby forest of Dubrava, in the thirteenth century, the canal was filled in, becoming the city’s main street making it bigger. The palaces and houses that overlook the Stradun, date back to the seventeenth, rebuilt in the style of the time, after Ragusa had suffered serious damage, due to the earthquake of 1667.
As a result, all the buildings on the street, in addition to style share the same structure. The premises of the shop on the ground floor, separated from inhabited rooms, occupy the other floors and shops that had a door and an arched window, from where the goods were passed to customers.
Stradun extends for 300 meters in the center of Dubrovnik, in a direction east-west and connects the western entrance, Pile Gate (Vrata od Pila), with the east, the Port of Ploce (Vrata od Ploča).
