The island’s most prominent feature is a volcano – an active one at that. In July 14, 2000, a series of eruptions began in Mount Oyama which led the island to be completely evacuated by September. Residents were allowed to return on February 1, 2005 after four years of volcanic emissions. The island also has the highest concentration of poisonous gases in the world and as such, its residents carry gas masks with them wherever they go. Click the next ARROW to see the next image!
