Those who seek a trip to Italy will usually make a point of staying in Milan and the socioeconomic capital rarely disappoints. 1. Know Some Italian
No one is expecting you to become fluent in a foreign language, but the old saying of “when in Rome…” certainly applies here. If you are able to learn a few key phrases before visiting Milan, this will help to guide your transactions and make it much easier for you to make your way around the city. Best of all, Italian is pronounced in the exact same manner as it looks, which makes for much easier communication.
2. Smoking and Drinking
Americans who are tired of all the newfound anti-smoking ordinances being passed stateside experience little to no relief when heading to Milan. The city has numerous anti-smoking signs posted and outdoor smoking is strictly prohibited. If you are looking for a spot to enjoy a butt, head to any number of local bars and pubs and smoke to heart’s content. Many Italians are heavy smokers and won’t mind the company.
3. Tipping
While tipping in Milan is not mandatory, it is encouraged and a variety of service industry employees will happily accept token amounts of money as a thank you for the help that they provide. Service charges are typically added to your restaurant bill, but you have the option of paying extra if you were particularly satisfied. Luggage handlers and taxi drivers accept tips, as well.
4. Pickpocket Safety
Pickpockets and bag snatchers are an unfortunate side effect of traveling to Milan and they will prey on unsuspecting tourists who fail to take the proper safety precautions. Beware of thieves on two wheel vehicles, as they have the ability to zip by and snatch your purse before you even know what hit you. Keep as many of your precious items in your hotel safe as possible and don’t carry massive wads of cash on your person.
5. Choosing The Right Time Of Year
Milan offers the chance to visit all year round. Their climate cycle is much like ours and tourists can make their decision based on the time of year that they prefer. Winters are far from freezing, so there is no need to pay a premium for a summertime plane ticket. Milan’s weather offers a great deal of flexibility, as travelers can sit back and wait for the least expensive plane ticket available.
