5Farallon Islands, United States

Located off the coast of San Francisco, the sea around the islands was used as a dumping site for radioactive waste between 1946 and 1970. The exact location of the waste is unknown and the risk it poses to the environment is also unclear. Another cause for concern: the island is inhabited by elephant seals and as such, is an attraction for great white sharks. Click the next ARROW to see the next image!
