Vale dos Vinhedos, Brazil

Forget the sandy beaches of Rio de Janeiro and see an area reminiscent of the Italian Piedmont. In the late 1800’s, southern Brazil has experienced a massive influx of Italian immigrants, mainly from Northern Italy. The largest and most important wine regions of the country, the Serra Gaucha and Vale dos Vinhedos, now represent nearly 90% of wine production in Brazil. The red wines are made with the use of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Ancellotta, Pinot Noir, Touriga Nacional and Teroldego. The whites include Riesling, Chardonnay, Malvasia and Glera. Sparkling wines produced in dry and sweet styles are among the most sought after.
