Doel |The artistic ghost town

In Belgium, there is a city abandoned by its inhabitants and repopulated by the writers.

Doel

Lovers of street art, there is a place waiting for you. It’s called Doel and it is a completely deserted city while inhabited only by drawings on the walls.

Doel is located in Belgium, in the region of Flanders, and it is famous in the news for the nuclear power plant which it houses for a number of years. In fact, it is not because of this that it has been turned into a ghost town ,but because in 2008 Doel became part of a demolition project of the entire town for the enlargement of the port of Antwerp , a project that forced the residents to leave their homes .

Thus, in 2012, humans have begun to substitute robots, giant animals and strange figures and characters were created by writers, who painted on every wall of the city written , drawings and graffiti , making the city a symbol of Doel street art.

The idea of creating designs on each brick, roof and window on each of Doel is an attack on local politicians and their idea of demolishing the city, a way to dissuade them from the project, also because in the meantime Doel has become a tourist destination, attracting many tourists, artists, fans and the merely curious to visit a city that is peculiarly short and will unfortunately be torn down and become just a colorful pile of rubble.

If someone considers it vandalism , they should think again , because the murals of Doel are proof of the power of art and the demonstration that even the darkest environments , can become a colorful canvas where the creativity can flourish.
