Lëkurës Castle was built by Suleiman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire that led to its greatest extent and power, in 1537, to control the bay of Saranda, the starting point for the conquest of the opposite island of Corfu.
The castle fell into disrepair and it is known to have two imposing towers over the terraces and walkways, which dominates the surrounding landscape. Today it is very popular with tourists, as well as the beautiful view to the typical Albanian, meat and vegetables, prepared by the restaurant which is located inside.
We are in southern Albania, bordering Greece, near the city of Saranda, renamed Porto Edda, in honor of his daughter Edda Ciano Mussolini during the Italian rule (1939-1944). Today Saranda has been developed as a tourist center, which is beginning to be known outside the borders of Albania.
Even so, from Saranda, half an hour by ferry, you get to Corfu, and with half an hour you can get to the archaeological site of Butrint, a protected UNESCO World Heritage.
