From incredible caves to beautiful mountain gardens, there’s more to Barbados than just sand and sun. This romantic destination has long attracted couples, whether for incredible honeymoons or relaxing and romantic tropical getaways.
If you’re visiting Barbados with your partner, be sure to try some of these five great romantic, adventurous, and exciting activities:
1. Visit Bathsheba Beach
Bathsheba may be best known as Barbados’s top surfing beach, but don’t let that put you off visiting for a relaxing swim and stroll. This beach is legendary amongst locals for its saltwater pools, which form as the surf rolls out across the rocky beach.
Legend has it that the saltwater pools of Bathsheba Beach are so full of minerals that they resemble the milk bath of King David’s wife Bathsheba. Even if you don’t bathe in the rock pools, Bathsheba’s incredible giant boulders make it worth a visit.
2. Explore Harrison’s Cave
First discovered in 1795, Harrison’s Cave was forgotten by all but a few locals until the late 1970s. Today, it’s one of Barbados’s most impressive attractions – a gigantic expanse of underground caves filled with limestone stalactites and stalagmites.
The caves are easily accessible via a tramway, which guides visitors up to the start of the cave complex. Bring a flashlight, as these incredible subterranean caves can get very dark during the early morning and late afternoon.
3. Snorkel at Carlisle Bay
Carlisle Bay is one of Barbados’s most easily accessible snorkelling beaches. Just a few minutes from the centre of Bridgetown, this amazing bay is home to a variety of marine relics such as cannon balls, anchors, and rusted hulls.
While scuba diving is the activity of choice for most adventure tourists, most of the bay’s sights can be seen from the surface. Rent a mask and snorkel from a vendor to see the bay’s incredible coral and marine relics up close.
4. Stroll Along the South Coast Boardwalk
Enjoy the warm weather of Barbados as you stroll down the South Coast Boardwalk during the late afternoon. Built along the island’s southern coastline, the boardwalk takes visitors past white sand beaches and granite coastal rock formations.
The boardwalk is easily accessible by private car, and there are several routes that will take you past some of Barbados’s finest beaches. Drop by in the early evening to watch the fantastic tropical sunset before enjoying a delicious Bajan meal.
5. Relax in Hunte’s Gardens
Located in the middle of Barbados’s interior rain forest, Hunte’s Gardens couldn’t be more peaceful. Designed and built by horticulturalist Anthony Hunte, the gardens are home to hundreds of unique and interesting tropical plant species.
While horticulturalists will love the gardens, even visitors with no interest in local flora and fauna will have a wonderful time. Bring your camera and keep watch for colourful birds and amazing tropical insects.
