Ossip Zadkin was a Russian-born French sculptor. Born in Belarus then he became partof the Russian Empire from a Jew father and mother of Scottish descents as IoselAronovič Čadkin, after attending the art school in London, Zadkine settled in Paris around 1910. There he became part of the Cubist movement, however, developing a personal style, strongly influenced by the Africans.
Small but designed with great care and attention to detail, the museum displays approximately 300 sculptures, made by Zadkine with various materials (wood, clay, marble, bronze and stone), as well as drawings, photographs and tapestries. Inside the building, the light is scattered by the huge windows in order to give to the works an intriguing dimension, in some cases subtly sensual, more often intimately dark.
Outside the garden, it is unknown how deliberately it was left in a semi-wild, some twisted and powerful metal structures protruding from green plants, almost struggling to be enveloped by the green primordial nature. Near the Luxembourg Gardens, in addition to the permanent exhibition are beingorganized at least two events per year. The museum is open every day except Monday, from 10:00 to 18:00, the entry is free until September this year.
